We designed this mantel for a firefighter in Windsor, they wanted a wide mantel for a HDTV wall mount.
The owners liked our York mantels fluted legs so we designed this on that basis. They also wanted a 12" top for art & an HDTV, so we had to make the legs deeper to accommodate the mantels depth. The tile was small over the firebox, (we prefer to have a 12" tile there) so we added a bit of height to the frieze, over all height was a specific request for the TV.
We designed this mantel for a couple in Petaluma, they wanted a tall mantel to fit between these windows.
The Petaluma fireplace surround was a unique challenge. The two plantation shutters determined the width of the mantel top. From there we sized in for the crown, which made our leg width. So we had to make it with a crown that made a good mantel proportion to the opening within the constraints The owners wanted something not too decorative as well.
These fireplaces we installed and designed for the owners during a home remodel.
The Bodega fireplace in the family room with an TV and components inset into the wall above, we made these with cherry to match the kitchen cabinets we did during this remodel. We also used the same stone for the range hood. The master bath also got a fireplace built into the end of the water jet tub in a niche for a cozy spa like niche to relax in the owner loved this space we designed for them.
This fireplace surround concept was from the owner/designer we made it work for them.
We can build just about any fireplace surround that you can imagine. This design was a request for a contemporary look with craftsman elements and floating bookcases. This is an example where only a custom piece would fit the location.
This fireplace surround was for a police officer in Petaluma.
The York Mantel has a return to the wall which was framed out for the and the old brick fireplace. While we were there doing finishing work we sized the width of the marble hearth so we would could fit the legs & base without an overhang before it was ordered. The return gives the legs good depth, and we were constrained by the framing width but were able to add a nice wide leg.
This fireplace surround was for an interior designer in Santa Rosa.
The interior designer for the Fountaingrove fireplace surround requested we build him a mantel that would match the homes mission cabinet style, the owner didn't want any over statement. We made mission elements in the frieze. The over all design was constrained by the framing and the hearth & firebox locations. It very difficult to get this one to look proportionate.

The Process for a fireplace Mantel Installation
Look over our mantels designs from our past builds and see what elements you would like to have in your mantel.
If you have something specific in mind find some magazine or on-line images and we'll mix and match so we get the perfect design for you.
We'll measure your existing firebox and give you an onsite estimate. We'll build it in our local shop and we will also install it for you.
Here are some frequently asked questions and what we like to see in place for our estimate.
What we prefer to have in place
TILE: For a mantel with a new tile face we typically we like to see a minimum of 8 inches of tile on the sides and 12 for the top, so we can get clearance for combustibles for a mantel only upgrade.
BRICK FIREPLACE: We usually can design a mantel or surround to your existing brick, we would determine the safety clearances for you before we take on this kind of mantel upgrade.
GAS INSERT: If you are upgrading to a new more efficient and safer insert and are doing the project yourself we like to see the insert installed and tiled. We then take the measurements from those existing conditions. Keep your new FP manual we need that as each manufacturer has their own combustible clearance specifications.
HEARTH: The hearth is the section on the floor that projects out from the firebox. Typically most newer gas fireplaces don't need them, they are for the sparks thrown from wood burners and heat to combustables. If you do want a raised or are building a new hearth we like to see 14 inches beyond the side of the firebox so our surround leg can site on it.
An entire fireplace upgrade with a new mantel
We can handle the entire process for you as well, upgrade or frame for a gas insert, schedule the plumbing, electrical and tiling installation, then build your custom mantel and bring in the finishing trades.
Your New Mantels Finish Paint or Stain
For paint grade mantels we can brush on two coats of primer for you in our shop.
If you are using a pro painter some prefer to do their own priming.
We can work also with your finisher, he could do it before we install for example.
We designed this for a firefighter in Sonoma, a craftsman style over mantel for a HDTV wall mount and Electric fireplace insert.
The owners liked our Santa Rosa TV over mantel so we designed this on that basis. The 60" thin line plasma TV in the over mantel has a flat black background so the TV looks framed by our trimwork. The fireplace insert is an electric heater with a screen that mimics a fire so it's a simple hook-up and the glass tile makes the modern craftsman look glow with warmth.
We designed this for an interior designer in Santa Rosa an over mantel for a LED wall mount and tied into the crown molding.
The owners had the existing wood burning fireplace so we re-built the hearth for the new surround with over mantel.
We then had our HDTV specialist and electrician run new lines and we located the components in a near by closet.
We then came back and installed the mantel and crown, these picture were before the interior designer had completed.
